Old school Guard

These are quite possibly are some of my favorite figures. Copplestone Rogue Trader Imperial Guard!

I've collected quite a few over the years and finally feel confident enough to paint them. So far I've got one squad, a rhino, a sentinel and a commissar. Not a massive amount so far but there's plenty in boxes just waiting to get paint o them :-)

I've gone for one of the original looks, grey fatigues, black flak armour and standard boltgun grey for the weapons. The weapons on the troopers have been changed for the modern Cadian plastics as I'm not keen on the original lasguns (too eighties, if that makes sense). The sentinal and rhino have been done in codex grey and have had suitable weathering. there's also a modern gun on the rhino and I'm thinking of losing the lascannon on the sentinel and changing it for something smaller (I've got three sentinels but no mutilasers for them).

Figure bases are red to try and match my Mars terrain as I fancied something a bit different rather than the usual green.

  1. Hey those are great! I never had but a few, but I have always liked the old copplestone guard figures. The lasgun changes are well done too, makes them seem a bit more contemporary. (although they are not Cadian pattern lasguns, but Catachan)

For the sentinel, I think a change to a different gun would be a good way to go. The shoulder hump portion of the gun looks a bit off, and I think painting it darker would help too.

    1. Thanks for the input (didn’t know about the lasguns, I got them second hand).

I’m thinking of some of the new plastic Ad Mech guns might work, failing that it’ll be a scratchbuild.

  3. I've always loved these minis. I think you are right about the lascannon, maybe some kind of stubber like the one on the Rhino would make more sense. Anyway, these look superb!!

    1. Thanks 😊

Yeah, I think that’s probably the best choice.

  5. Brilliant! These are great old figures and you have done a very nice job. Though, they would look a lot better with Goblin Green bases...

I thought about that type of base for about a minute before deciding against it lol

  6. Just in the process of renovating my collection too. Never bought that version of the sentinel as at the time I quickly moved on to the full womble- armoured Marines. I also discovered a cache of the original metal Penal Legion complete with "minders" hidden in the bottom of the steel trunk I kept them all in. I have Rogue Trader still but am more likely to mash up the 1998 and 2004 versions of 40K as I think I can still remember those rules. just!

    1. Penal legion would be great along with the original Rough Riders!

These won't be used with GW rules as we tend to use either modified M&T or Fistful of Lead.
