The Japanese defence of Yinliuzhen

Had a little Boxer Rebellion game the other night using a modified version of Muskets and Tomahawks. It was a similar set up to the previous Boxer game I put on last year but with a few changes.

As this was a friendly game between the pair of us there was no need for the village to be in the middle so it was enlarged and placed on side of the table with the Japanese defending it (using the new OSHIRO barricades etc) and the Chinese coming on en masse from the other side of the table.

There was a main road leading to the village through the paddy fields which was covered by units of Japanese infantry in the centre with naval crew and civilian support on the periphery; the only way for the Chinese was a direct assault...

Here is the initial set up. The Boxers were still coming up although the Imperial Chinese were already in place at the bottom of the photo.

The Boxers eventually arrived and immediately started to charge the Japanese positions

Repulsed several times the continuous fire from the Imperials started to take their toll and the Japanese, although staying at their posts, started to waver.

A final charge form the remaining Boxers managed to wipe a unit of Japanese behind one of the courtyard house walls and they swarmed over.

The Chinese were in the village but the supporting units on the peripheries were coming up via the central road and the fate of the Chinese cut off in the courtyard seemed to be sealed...

All the buildings, walls, barricades and Japanese infantry are from the OSHIRO webshop here. The Boxers and Imperial Chinese are a mix of Foundry and Redoubt with the naval brigade figures from Copplestone Castings

BLAM 2018 Boxer Rebellion game

Apologies for the lack of posts recently, I’ve been doing some freelance work which has sapped all my time but I did get a chance to have a weekend of gaming 😊

Three days of gaming goodness at a local pub with about 30 others of various nationalities.

The first game I hosted was a small Boxer Rebellion one. The rules were a simplified version of Muskets and Tomahawks and there were four players; two Chinese and two Japanese.

The Chinese player had to get into the village compound and kill at least two units and the Japanese had to stop them. All within four turns. The Chinese could recycle units as they were of a poorer quality than the Japanese (and also, they weren’t behind barricades).

The game was played three times and it ended up with two Chinese victories and one Japanese but to be fair the first Chinese victory was down to some rather splendid dice rolling on their part and some rubbish rolling from the Japanese.

On to the photos. Not much of a battle report but the photos are here in sequence. The buildings are from my Chinese building range, the Japanese are from my Japanese figure range and the Chinese are predominantly Wargames Foundry.

Next up will be the cartel game.

Some more Boxer Japanese

Got another three packs ready to go to the casters very soon. Firing line, casualties and naval armed with rifles. They've needed a bit of tweaking, hence why they weren't ready for Salute but they are done now. Of course heads and backpacks supplied as normal.

Once they are back I'll paint some display versions and post those :-)

Moving onto the Chinese next, woohoo!

And yet another Chinese building base

The last one for now. I've got some more buildings being mastered at the moment and when these are done I'll do some more building bases but for the time being, this is it.

Not much to say apart from the fact that everything apart from the compound walls and front building roof has been scratch built.

We have been using the Fist Full of Lead rules recently and are enjoying them greatly and it's not too much of a push to convert them for Boxer Rebellion (Pipe Full of Opium maybe...) so with any luck in a week or two ll the building bases along with some other bits and pieces will see some action :-)

Enough wordage, on to the pictures!

More Boxer Japanese

I am pleased to say that we have some more Boxer Japanese greens ready to go to the casters. This time we have a firing line. Four poses as with the normal packs and as soon as I get them back I'll paint some up. These figures can also be used for the start of the Russo-Japanese war as the uniforms didn't start to change until later in the war.

They are to go with our existing Boxer Japanese figures that are pictured below. There are also plans to have a pack of casualties and armed naval troops then it'll be moving onto the first Chinese packs.

Boxer Japanese

Time for a proper post after the long quiet and for today we have my Boxer Japanese figures that have been painted for me by a very nice chap in Scotland, Brian Phillps (who's website linky is on the left)

He's done a cracking job on them and I'm slightly ashamed about the quality of the photos as they don't really do the figures justice (I blame the weather... Well, not really, poor skills on my part more like). Anyway, if the weather is good tomorrow I'll go out side and take some more along with the boxer building that is the start of a new range.

I'm still not convinced about using the pad for post do I might revert to the old steam driven desktop (it's easier to see what you have done/messed up) but I'll leave you for now with a few more of the better photos.

Slight edit on the original as I've reverted to the desktop (damn sight easier if you ask me).

The Japanese have landed

Well, come back from the casters anyway :-)

They are for the Boxer Rebellion and the early stages of the Russo-Japanese war (some units kept the uniform till the end of the war) and for the moment there are four infantrymen, three command and four naval crewmen.

The heads are separate (see picture below), they come with separate backpacks and the command pack comes with a banner pole and a simple flag (not shown here). The prices are as follows. £6 for the infantry, £6 for the command and £5 for the naval crewmen.

There will be a proper section on my normal website soon (after Salute) showing them painted, descriptions and general information.

In these photos they are mounted on 2mm thick, 20mm bases and there is a scale photo below with other manufacturers.

I have some normal marching troops on the go at the moment and plans for lots more, including cavalry, equipment, the odd vignette and some more naval types.

I will then be moving onto the other nations, probably Russia first for the Russo-Japanese war but we'll see what takes my fancy.

I'll also be bringing out a range of buildings suitable for the Boxer Rebellion and Russo-Japanese war during the course of the year.

If you would like some of these then drop me an e-mail using the address on the left hand side at the top (the side-bar). Paypal only I'm afraid for the moment but that might change.

The figures in order are, Copplestone Chinese, my infantry, my command, Perry Samurai and a Tsuba Miniatures officer
